Working legally in China: permits come before the first day
Legal employment is a coordinated process involving the employer, the work permit and the appropriate entry or residence document.

Confirm the employment and permit route together
China’s official guide states that foreigners working in China should obtain a work permit. For work lasting more than 90 days, the guide describes obtaining the relevant notification, applying for a Z visa, and completing the work-type residence process after entry.
The exact materials and sequence depend on the applicant category and local authority. The employer normally plays a central role in the application, so verify that it can sponsor the intended position before making travel commitments.
Do not treat another visa purpose as work permission
Visa-free entry and documents issued for tourism, study or family purposes do not automatically authorise paid employment. Confirm the current rule for the actual activity with the competent authority.
Clarify the employer’s role first
Ask the prospective employer which entity will employ you, where the role is based and who will handle the work-permit application. A written offer does not by itself establish permission to work.
Match documents to the route
Use the current official guidance to confirm which work, entry and residence documents apply to your case. Keep copies of the employer’s instructions and ask the competent authority before starting work if your visa or status was issued for another purpose.
